Usurious payday loans, unfair debt collection and credit reporting tactics, deceptive student loan services, hidden banking and credit fees, mortgage, housing, insurance and construction fraud, imposter scams, illegal towing, misrepresented medical and travel services, telecom monopolies, dishonest auto sales, repairs, and financing. The need for consumer justice is everywhere – and the majority of this need isn’t being met.
Oregon Consumer Justice (OCJ) is committed to ensuring that all people in Oregon experience a safe and fair marketplace by building an equitable and sustainable ecosystem that puts people first, makes sure that every financial and business transaction is fair and safe, and ensures that consumers have recourse when their rights are violated. OCJ advances the rights of consumers through advocacy, strategic litigation, research, education, and engagement, and works to bring consumer justice into balance for all Oregonians.
OCJ is now seeking an inaugural Chief Financial Officer who will bring vision and strategic leadership to shaping early-stage organizational development. The position is a full-time exempt role and reports to the Executive Director.
Position Overview
The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) will ensure that our work to create a more just and equitable consumer marketplace in Oregon is supported by impeccable financial practices, strategic use of resources, and nimble and flexible operating systems.
The CFO, as a member of the executive leadership team, will be responsible as a thought partner and collaborative visionary for shaping and managing OCJ’s finances and resources.
The CFO will hire, train, and manage a team of staff and contractors.
The CFO will work closely and collaboratively with executive leadership and program directors to ensure that budgeting and financial practices support their work towards our goal of achieving consumer justice.
In addition, the CFO and team will support the Executive Director in decision making about OCJ‘s financial matters and will be the primary point of contact with external contractors retained for specific purposes and consultation.
Successful candidates must be deeply committed to social justice issues as well as diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). This position serves as a trusted member of the executive team of a prominent consumer justice organization.
The ideal candidate for this position will be an experienced not-for-profit financial professional who is excited about the opportunity to apply their skills and experience in service of an exciting social justice venture. In the beginning, this person will have to be comfortable with taking care of day-to-day finance and accounting tasks while simultaneously building the systems, processes, and staffing as OCJ grows. The position calls for a combination of professional and technical expertise, a passion for social justice and diversity, equity and inclusion, and the inclination and ability to contribute as a partner in the leadership team to build and implement the strategic vision and plan for the years to come.
Required
- Minimum 5 years of senior financial management experience in not-for-profit organizations.
- Deep familiarity with and understand ing of not-for-profit GAAP and financial reporting.
- Commitment to the ideals of justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion, including a demonstrated commitment to building and working within diverse communities, fostering an inclusive office environment as a supervisor, and promoting DEI in the workplace.
- Significant managerial experience leading a high-performing team, including direct supervision of program and support staff.
- A passion for consumer justice, and a commitment to addressing the disparate impacts of injustice on Black, Indigenous and Tribal Communities, Communities of Color, people living with disabilities, LBGTQIA+ individuals, and others.
- Experience working in a start-up or high growth environment.
- Experience filing not-for-profit tax returns and conducting financial audits.
- Creating innovative financial solutions and funding models to support out of the box mission-driven programs and approaches.
- Strategic and creative financial problem solving and forward planning skills to develop mission-driven solutions. Strong financial planning, forecasting, and analysis skills to complement those efforts.
- Strong written, verbal, and intra-personal communications skills with the ability to communicate complicated financial matters with non-finance stakeholders.
- Process and workflow development and improvement.
- Budget planning and management for non profit progams and service offerings.
- Treasury, cashflow and investment planning and management.
- Ability to navigate compliance with 501(c)3 and 501(c)4 expenditure limits and reporting requirements at the federal level and in Oregon.
Optional, but a Plus
- Certified Public Accountant, and/or MBA or bachelor’s degree in business, finance, accounting, or equivalent experience.
